Frequently Asked Questions

Your home renovation is likely to require a variety of specialists: an interior designer, general contractor, structural engineer (if moving walls), and other specialists, like carpenters, electricians, plumbers, and more.

We recommend discussing the full scope of your project either with your interior designer or your general contractor before hiring the other roles. This will save you tons of time, as we can quickly tell you which roles you will need and refer you to professionals we know and trust.

Bringing us into the conversation as early as possible allows us to have the greatest impact on the way your bathroom and ensuite look, feel, and function for you every day. Though we always use your vision and lifestyle as our inspiration, we will propose solutions and innovations you have probably never considered before. These ideas will be much easier to implement before any work has begun.

Of course, if work on your home has already begun and you’re feeling stuck, there is still a chance we can help. Reach out to us to discuss your specific circumstances.

We know this probably isn’t the answer you want to hear, but every renovation is different. It depends on scope, materials, labor, and more. That said, you can generally expect a renovation to take about 8-12+ months, including the design phase, construction, and final installation.

Once we know more about your specific project, we will be able to give you a more definitive estimate. We also take great care to refine your project’s timeline at each stage of our design process for full transparency. Note: Many of our clients will elect to reside elsewhere during construction, or, if they choose to stay, to split the home into two separate phases. We would be happy to discuss your options with you.

The typical investment in a renovation varies widely with scope. Are we tearing your home down to the studs? Removing walls and moving plumbing and electrical? The more invasive the work, the higher the investment. Other factors to consider include the materials we choose (e.g. marble, custom cabinetry, high-end appliances), the experts you hire, and more.

Though we can’t give you a quick answer here, we will work with you to discuss your desired overall investment, explore your goals, determine the expected increase in home value, and of course, create an itemized budget that optimizes your investment.

AKG Design is based in Reston and serves Northern VA, the DC metro area, Arlington, McLean, Great Falls, Alexandria, Old Town Alexandria, Middleburg, and more. If you don’t see your location on this list, just ask.

Absolutely. Many of our clients own second homes and prefer to reside elsewhere while construction is underway. Although your GC is responsible for executing the design with their extended team, we serve as your liaison, communicating between parties, answering questions, and keeping you updated on the progress.

At the end, we will also finalize the design with any necessary furnishings, fixtures, dishware, or decor to make the house feel like a home. Then, we invite you to return to celebrate with us and enjoy it!

Your project is a partnership between you and us. (This is why every project in our portfolio looks different!) We love getting to know what makes you special, what you love to do, and the vision you have for your future. If you share our approach, we invite you to book an introductory call with us here.
