This renovation in Oak Hill, VA combines function and aesthetics to create a dream kitchen that will easily facilitate aging in place.
When the family of three moved into the home in 2019, the HVAC return was smack in the middle of the house, the kitchen had just enough for one cook at a time, and too many walls splitting the small space. The family knew they needed a major renovation in order to accommodate their lifestyle which included lots of cooking and hosting.
This kitchen renovation was part of a much larger project that doubled the size of the house and opened the main floor to create extensive hosting space.
The primary challenge was how to open the space, yet keep the kitchen as its own space in the wide open floor plan. In addition, the homeowner wanted plenty more countertop space and different hosting options.
To expand the kitchen, we had to first remove a large bearing wall, reduce an oversized deck door to a single door, and move the access to the garage to a different location. the whole kitchen to add a beautiful large island with a prep sink, a larger window to bring in more natural light, a pantry, and a bar area. Mixed slab and shaker doors, stained Maple wall cabinets are interspersed with reeded glass doors, black base cabinets, and floating glass shelf. On each side of the oven, we installed spice and utensils pullouts so everything stays off the counter.
Counter height and extra deep cabinets by the fridge house all the small appliances like the toaster and smoothie maker, that stay plugged in for everyday use. The wood countertop detail adds to the linear quality of the space. The island is the home for all things prepping with a small sink, large drawers for pots and pans, and small ones to house all the kitchen little gadgets, rounding it up with cutting boards and trash/Recycling pullouts.
For the Appliances, we selected mixed brands to maximize efficacy, safety, and design style. The Silver Monogram induction 3 of 4 cooktop blends into the quartzite countertop and the Black Felmac Hood creates a dramatic focal point, the hood has a 24- hour vent feature that circulates air even if no one is cooking. The sharp microwave drawer has air frying and convection cooking. Rounding the appliance is the SKS countertop fridge with craft ice which is perfect for those evenings when the Scottish husband hosts whiskey tastings.
All recessed fixtures, undercabinet lighting, LED illumination under the island, and wall sconces in the bar area – are all controllable via Alexa. Sustainability was also important, and as such, we chose natural materials everywhere possible that can easily be recycled or upcycled at the end of their life like wood, glass, and natural stones.
